BREAKING NEWS: 63 die in 140 accidents in Ogun

Abeokut – No fewer than 63 people died in 140 road accidents in different parts of Ogunbetween Jan.1 and Feb. 28. The Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Ayobami Omiyale, made this known in an interview in Abeokuta on Tuesday. He said 131 commercial vehicles, 70 private vehicles and one belonging to government were involved in the accidents during the period under review. According to him, those who died in the accidents included 38 males, 14 females and11 children. He said there was a slight increase in the rate of accidents during the period when compared with the 121 recorded in the corresponding month in 2012. Omiyale said the command had intensified efforts toward educating commercial and private motorists on the need for them to obey traffic rules and regulations. “Our mandate is to reduce carnage significantly and we are leaving no stone unturned while drivers must appreciate the need to observe traffic rules and regulations. “It is sad to see how people die on the roads due to negligence and refusal to obey rules that govern safe driving. “Drivers must conduct a proper and thoroughcheck of their vehicles before putting them on the road. “They must also refrain from buying used tyres, because most of these tokunbo tyres are already expired before they get into Nigerian markets. “It is just like being on a suicide mission for vehicle owners to be fixing used tyres on their vehicles, ‘’ he said.
